Second Language
a.a. 2004/5 and 2005/6
All you need to know about the second language exams, how to prepare for them and enrol for them. (It's then up to you to pass them!)
All students have to pass a second language exam at level B2 (European Framework) for a total of 6 credits. At present the three languages available are:

Second Language Courses
Student numbers do not permit the School to offer courses and exams in these three languages and therefore an agreement (mutuazione) has been made with the Faculty of Arts whereby students sit the second year Module C exam, in their chosen language, of the degree course in Modern Languages for Business and Tourism (“Mediazione Linguistica per le Imprese e il Turismo”). The exam consist in both a written language exam and an oral exam. The codes for the respective exams are:

30180 Lingua Tedesca II (C)
The written exam is the CIAL "Prova di conoscenza linguistica - B2"
For French and German this exam is held weekly at the language lab in CIAL. You can enrol online for this exam. Visit the CIAL webiste to find out how. After you have enrolled for the online exam please write to me so that I can tell the CEL (collaboratore esperto linguistico) that you will not be doing the oral part. This part you have to do at the normal exam sessions at Lettere.
For Spanish you have to take the written exam held at the Faculty of Law. Sessions are 4 times a year. Dates are fixed only one month before the exam session and are in April, July, September and December.
It is very important that you enrol for the correct exam. The correct code for the B2 exam at Giursiprudenza is:
Spanish 25618
If there are no enrolments the exam is automatically cancelled so turning up on the day is NOT an option.
The oral exams are held five times a year in June, July, September, and January/February. Students are admitted to the oral exam only if they pass the written exam. SIS students do not need to study the course content of Module C of the degree course in “Mediazione Linguistica per le Imprese e Turismo”.
Courses at CIAL
The university language centre, CIAL, organises language courses in French, German and Spanish. Students from the School are allowed to attend one of these courses per level, without payment, up to and including B2b. Please note that while these courses offer more than adequate preparation for the exam, the CIAL end of course tests are not recognised for exam purposes. Also note CIAL cannot always guarantee offering B2 courses in Spanish, German and French if the number of students enrolling on courses is low.
Intensive courses are held each September, January and July. Extensive courses are held in the autumn and spring semesters. Students take the placement test online. It is not possible to enrol for CIAL courses if you have not taken the test. Please consult the CIAL website (http://www.unitn.it/cial/index.htm ) for sample tests, details and dates. CIAL holds 'live' placement tests for its courses early in October for the autumn semester for students who are not enrolled at the university (this might be the case of students from other universities who have yet to graduate when they start the degree programme.

Written exam:
French and German - online enrolment via the CIAL website. You can find clear instructions as to how to enrol for the written part. Remember that you do not have to do the oral part of this exam at CIAL (but at Lettere) http://portale.unitn.it/cial/portalpage.do?channelId=-53369
Spanish -The dates can be found by going on the 'bacheca appelli d'esame' in Esse3 and selecting 'Facoltà di Giurisprudenza' and then 'Prova di Competenze Linguistiche' for the Spanish written test.
Oral exam:
This is at the 'Facolta di Lettere e Filosofia'. You need to go onto Esse3 and then find 'Mediazione Linguistica per le Imprese e il Turismo' from the 'Corso di Studio' field. Here look for 'Lingua Spagnola (or 'Tedesca' or 'Francese') 2C'
You will find 3 dates for each exam in June and January and 2 dates in September. You need to enrol for the oral exam - the second/third of the two/three.
Students must also inform me, AT LEAST 30 DAYS BEFORE THE DATE OF THE ORAL EXAM, that they intend taking the exam so that I can give a complete list of SIS students to the respective course lecturers. If students do not do this they may find they have to answer questions on the content of the second year Module C of Mediazione Linguistica, which may be specialised discourse or translation studies depending on the language.
If for any reason you are unable to enrol with Esse3 for either or both of the exams you must contact me immediately and also send an email to the course lecturer (not the language assistant).
Results
Results of the written exam are available at the CIAL office 10 days after the exam.
Oral Exam
Please contact the course lecturer at Lettere well in advance of the exam (a couple of months) to agree on a topic to prepare for the oral exam. This topic may be chosen by the student but must be approved by the course lecturer. Students are expected to prepare a file of documents/materials on this topic to discuss during the exam. The materials can be from from various sources including text-books, journals or the press, and possibly multimedia materials when appropriate. Registering the exam
If students have enrolled for the exam the course lecturer will automatically have an exam slip with the student’s name. The exam will be registered following the normal procedure at the oral exam.
Students should remind the examiner to make a note on the slip stating that the registration is for the second language module A (3 credits) of the LSSEI. The examiner should also write the appropriate exam codes:

Students in possession of any of the above certificates, or any certificates recognised by ALTE as higher than the above, are not required to take the second language exams described herein. Similarly, the second language requirement is waived for students who took their high school diploma or graduated in their chosen second language or were awarded a “Doppia Laurea”.
In order to be awarded the second language credits students must bring the original certificate(s) to the School Secretary who will then make a copy and forward the necessary documents to the student office.
